Walking in the Cevennes
An introductory guidebook to the best walking in the Cevennes region of southern France, describing 16 day-walks in the southern Cevennes (based around Le Vignan), 15 day-walks in the northern Cevennes (based around Florac) and a 5-day trek around Mont Lozère. Although just across the River Rhone from Provence, the Cevennes is one of France's wild and unknown regions. Resembling the Scottish Highlands in places (similar in height at a maximum of 1567m, but warmer and with fewer midges), the region includes the 230,000 sq km Parc National des Cevennes and the upper reaches of the Tarn gorge. First introduced to a wider world by Caesar's crossing and then by the young Robert Louis Stevenson and his ?Walks with a Donkey' (1879), the Cevennes still has much that can be freshly explored. Compared with Provence the landscapes are harsher, more mountainous, less populated. The weather is more extreme: winters are cold, windblown and snowy, summers are dry and hot. The Cevennes attracts the walker and explorer who has a taste for a more rugged and subtler landscape. This is Janette Norton's third Cicerone guide to France, following on from her Haute Savoie and Provence guides. Based in the north around Florac and in the south around Le Vigan, the guide explores the walking potential of the region in 31 half- to full-day walks and the well-known five-day circuit of Mont Lozère.
Earth Under Siege
This second edition of Earth Under Siege, provides a basic understanding of how our physical environment functions and how human activities affect it. Intended to educate the lay person-especially the policy makers, business administrators, and political leaders of the future-about some of the most pressing problems facing our modern world, this important book effectively describes the realities of environmental pollution and global change. It provides a comprehensive description of the natural environment and builds a foundation on which the science and policy of current environmental issues can be understood.
Walking in Provence
Guide to walking in Provence, southern France, Europe. An excellent selection of 42 walks in this popular area. Covering the Alps Maritimes, Var, Vaucluse and northern Provence, the suggested walks are of short and medium length. Each walk is fully described and illustrated with a sketch map and photographs. Local information of interest to the walker is thoroughly researched, and each walk captures the very essence and atmosphere of life in Provence. The walks are of short and medium length all with clear, accurate descriptions of the routes and detailed maps to accompany them. There is also practical information for the visitor as well as the historical and cultural background to the area. None of the walks in this book goes higher than 2000m and many of them are considerably lower level. They are generally within the capability of an averagely fit person and are graded Difficult, Medium or Easy.
In 1999, the first edition of this book put Azerbaijan on the travel map. Packed with practical, cultural, and culinary information as well as scores of maps it helped visitors and residents alike to make the most of this beautiful, varied, and much under-estimated country. Caspian Business News praised the book as being in the "usual travel guide format but with an added feel for the country based on in-depth research". This expanded, thoroughly-updated third edition includes ever wilder excursions into the mystical mountains and reveals quaint old Pensar mosques, little-known 6th century church ruins, more bubbling mud volcanoes, and bizarre natural flares in the land where even water catches fire (at Archivan and Bärdä). Visitors can uncover a field full of rusting Soviet-era tanks and armored vehicles near Puta, take idyllic Caucasian hikes from the timeless village of Xinaliq, and explore 4WD routes to remote Allar and secret Sim. There are even more off-beat curiosities pinpointed such as the Perigala "fairy castle", the "hand tree" in Göychay, a cowpie pyramid near Agdash, and a grand disemboweled Lenin statue at Yevlax. Also featured in this fully revised third edition are:

Starting life in the gutter, Jean-Marie d'Aumout rises through the ranks of eighteenth-century French society propelled by his wits and an obsession with finding the perfect taste. But beyond the palace walls, revolution is in the air and the country is clamouring with a hunger of a different kind.
